Ilse Cäcilie Bernhard

Groß Räschen, 4 April 1931 – Auschwitz, 1943

aged 11 when deported

Ilse Cäcilie Bernhard was born in Groß Räschen on 4 April 1931, the only child of Edith and Herbert Bernhard. She was named Cäcilie for her grandmother.

She spent her first years in the town where her family had their store. By the time she was eight she was living in Berlin, and she lived there with her mother until 1943.

In February 1943, aged eleven, she was deported to Auschwitz with her mother and murdered.

“Here lived Ilse Cäcilie Bernhard. Born 1931. Deported 1943. Murdered in Auschwitz.”

The Stolperstein in the pavement opposite Freienhufener Straße 2, Großräschen, laid on 22 March 2011. All nine stones

Before 1933

Her parents had married the summer before she was born, at the family store, where her father and her uncle Armin were partners.

1938 – 1945

By 1939 the store had been taken. Ilse was in Berlin, at Choriner Straße 53, and from 1940 she lived there in her mother's flat, with her aunts, uncles and her cousin Eva in the same house. Her father went to England.

On 19 February 1943 Ilse and her mother were deported to Auschwitz from Berlin, with her aunts Margarete and Frida and their families. She was eleven.

After

In 2011 a Stolperstein was laid for her in Großräschen.
