Armin's Jewish neighbour in Großräschen, who survived
Paul Sachs
1887 – after 1949
Paul Sachs lived in Bückgen, a village that is now part of Großräschen. He was not a shopkeeper like Armin. He worked in the offices of the Ilse mine, the big lignite mine near the town, where he was an authorised signatory: a trusted man who could sign for the company.
In February 1937 the police counted the Jews of the district and found five. Paul was one of them, with Armin, Herbert, Kurt Mannheim and the dentist Gerhard Hurwitz.
Paul's wife was not Jewish, and that protected him. He was humiliated, but he survived. His sister Meta did not. After the war he searched for her in Berlin.
Before 1933
Paul was born in 1887. His mother was very probably Cäcilia Sachs, born Klebamsky, who died in 1933. He had two sisters, Elisabeth and Meta, and a brother, Theodor.
1938 – 1945
His marriage kept him from deportation. His sister Elisabeth, who was married to a druggist in Senftenberg, survived in the same way. Meta, who lived in Senftenberg, was deported from Berlin to Auschwitz on 19 April 1943 and murdered.
After
In 1949 Paul was still in Berlin, still looking for Meta. In 2011 a Stolperstein was laid for him in Großräschen, beside stones for his mother and both his sisters.
What we don't know
We don't know his wife's name, whether they had children, or when he died.
