Vera Gerechter

Berlin, 24 July 1926 – Riga, 8 September 1942

aged 16

Vera Gerechter was born in Berlin on 24 July 1926, the younger daughter of Robert and Erna. She grew up at Frankfurter Allee 17, where her father had his dental practice.

Her father died when she was ten. She stayed with her mother through everything that followed.

A photograph of her survives from 1941, when she was about fifteen. A year later, on 31 August 1942, she was deported from Berlin with her mother, her grandfather and her aunt Paula. They were murdered in Riga on 8 September 1942. Vera was sixteen.

1933 – 1938

Vera was six in 1933. In October 1936 her father Robert died, after a severe illness.

1938 – 1945

In May 1939 Vera, her mother and her sister Ruth were living together at Annenstraße 39 in Berlin. Ruth got away; Vera stayed with her mother. Her grandfather Jakob and her aunt Paula came to live with them. On 31 August 1942 all four were deported to Riga.

After

After the war Ruth searched for her sister from Stockholm. In 1977 she filled in a Page of Testimony for her, with her photograph.
